📖 Before 1996: The Paperwork Nightmare
Back in the old days, buying shares meant receiving a physical paper certificate in the post. Weeks later. If the post office didn't lose it. If the certificate wasn't forged.
People kept share certificates in filing cabinets, bank lockers, and under beds. One wrong monsoon and your ₹2 lakh investment was papier-mâché.
In 1996, SEBI had a brilliant idea: What if we went digital? No more paper. No more lost certificates. No more monsoon-related financial disasters.

What is a Demat Account?
Demat = Dematerialised Account
Just as your bank account holds money in digital form (not actual notes), a Demat account holds your shares in digital form. No paper. No physical certificates. Just numbers in a computer.
Demat accounts are maintained by two government-backed depositories:
🏛️ NSDL — National Securities Depository Limited (NSE-linked)
🏛️ CDSL — Central Depository Services Limited (BSE-linked)
