Day 5: Your Home's X-Ray
Honest assessment — a complete health check for your home!

📖 The Doctor Analogy...
When you go to a doctor, what do they do first? They don't operate directly! First, they diagnose — check BP, X-Ray, blood test, ask for history. Only then is the treatment decided.
A home redesign is exactly the same. Designing directly without a diagnosis is like a doctor picking up a knife straight away! 😱 Today we will take a proper X-Ray of our home.

What is a Home Audit?
A Home Audit is a systematic evaluation of the current state of your home — what is working, what is not, what is missing, and what the priorities should be. This is the foundation for future design decisions.
Room-by-Room Audit Checklist
Living Room:
- ☐ Is the traffic flow good? (Can you walk around without bumping into anything?)
- ☐ Is the sofa/seating at the right distance from the TV? (8-12 feet is ideal for a 40-50 inch TV)
- ☐ Is there good natural light coming in? From where?
- ☐ Is a focal point clearly defined?
- ☐ Is there enough storage?
- ☐ Is artificial light adequate in the evening?
Bedroom:
- ☐ Is the bed size proportionate to the room?
- ☐ Is there access to the bed on both sides? (Are both bedside tables accessible?)
- ☐ Is wardrobe storage enough? (Typical family — 1.2m per person)
- ☐ Does morning light hit your eyes directly? (If it's a problem, install blackout curtains)
- ☐ Does the room have a relaxing feel or does it feel like an office?
Kitchen:
- ☐ Is the "Kitchen Triangle" correct? (Fridge → Sink → Stove — these three should form a triangle)
- ☐ Is there enough counter space for prep?
- ☐ Is storage used efficiently?
- ☐ Is ventilation proper? (Chimney or window?)
💡 Kitchen Triangle Rule:
Fridge, Sink, and Stove — these three form the "work triangle" of the kitchen. The combined distance between these three should be 12–26 feet. Too far = extra steps. Too close = cramped! This rule was developed at Cornell University in the 1940s and is still the gold standard today.

Your Home's Problem Areas — Category Wise
| Category | Common Problems | Quick Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 🌞 Light | Dark corners, harsh glare | Floor lamps, sheer curtains |
| 🏠 Space | Cluttered, cramped feeling | Declutter, multi-functional furniture |
| 🎨 Color | Too much, too little, wrong colors | Neutrals + 1-2 accent colors |
| 🛋️ Furniture | Wrong size, wrong placement | Measure, rearrange before buying |
| 📦 Storage | Things everywhere, no place | Vertical storage, hidden storage |
| 🎭 Style | Mixed, no identity | Define your style (Days 48-53) |
Priority Matrix — What Should Be Done First?
📊
Image Placeholder
A 2x2 priority matrix with axes: "Impact on Daily Life" (High/Low) and "Cost" (High/Low). Four quadrants: High Impact + Low Cost = DO FIRST; High Impact + High Cost = PLAN CAREFULLY; Low Impact + Low Cost = NICE TO HAVE; Low Impact + High Cost = AVOID
🧠 Renovation Priority Formula:
Priority Score = Impact on Daily Life × (100 ÷ Cost)
Example: New curtains (impact: 7/10, cost: ₹5,000) = 7 × (100/5000) = 0.14
New sofa (impact: 8/10, cost: ₹40,000) = 8 × (100/40000) = 0.02
The curtains give a higher priority score! Change the curtains first. 😄

🌟 Professional Tip — The "Pain Point" List:
For one week, keep noting down all the moments of frustration you experience in your house. "Ugh, there's no light here", "this drawer got stuck again", "this sofa is so awkward" — note it all down. By the end of the week, your renovation priority list will be ready. My designers call this the research period! 📓

🤯 Fun Fact:
IDEO (the world's most famous design firm) also has OBSERVATION as the very first phase of its "Design Thinking" process — no solutions, just observe. They say that the solutions to 90% of design problems are found through observation alone. So today's exercise is actually professional-level design research! 🎯

⚠️ Renovation Order Matters!
Always do it in this order: Structural → Plumbing/Electrical → Flooring → Paint → Furniture → Decor. If you buy furniture first and change the floor tiles later, you will have to move the furniture out! Right sequence = saves both time and money. 🔧

🎯 This Week's Task:
Complete the audit for the three main rooms in your house — use the checklist given above. Note down the problems in a list. Decide your priorities. After this, you can follow this course in a targeted way! Next week starts with Color Theory — it's a mind-blowing chapter. Get ready! 🎨
